In five contrasting but related movements, Circumpolaris Suite, is inspired by five circumpolar constellations: Ursa Minor, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Draco, and Ursa Major. Data derived from the stars of each of these constellations, such as their celestial longitude and latitude, brightness, as well as the shape of their aggregate from the Earth’s perspective, informed the compositional material for this piece. This is while the qualities of the legends behind these constellations inspired the mood of each movement: the energy and vigor of Draco (Latin for dragon), the broken pride of Cepheus the king, or the lonely heavy footsteps of the mother bear, Ursa Major, in a search for her son.
